With refernce to my telegram No.155
of 6th May relative to the Seamen's strike at
Hong ong and with troubles connected therewith,
I have the honour to transmit herewith a copy of
a despatch from His Majesty's Consul-General at
Canton enclosing a copy of correspondence with
the Acting Civil Governor of Kuangtung on the
subject of the incident at hatien where certain
of the strikers vere shot by the Hongkong police
in an attempt to force their way across the
frontier into Chinese territory.
Dr. Hu T'ing-fang in renewing the pro-
test of the Canton Government against the killing
of the Chinese in question demanded, as Your Lor
ship will observe, the punishment of the police
